Electrification and Sustainability

Electrification: As designers of cutting edge high performance, all electric buildings for over 20 years, our team has specialist knowledge on both designing all new electric buildings and electrifying existing buildings. We have advised major tech companies, electric utilities, local and Federal agencies on electrification strategies and feasibility including all electric kitchens, EV charging strategies, emerging vehicle to grid and vehicle to building strategies, net zero energy, PV/Battery microgrids, resilience and the impact of net zero energy on the grid.

Operational Decarbonization: In 2005, IDeAs Consulting started design on their own offices. Innovators David Kaneda at IDeAs Consulting, Scott Shell of ClimateWorks and Peter Rumsey of Point Energy Innovations collaborated on the first net zero energy, all electric commercial office building in the United States and coined the term “net zero energy” for the project. The building is also “net zero carbon” in operation and offset it’s construction related carbon through carbon offsets. Members of our team has since done nearly 100 subsequent all electric projects targeting net zero operational energy and are considered thought leaders in this area. Our current work includes design of PV/battery microgrids, designs for resilient facilities, and an off grid systems targeting 100% renewable energy use as we work to develop systems that can move buildings to actual zero operational carbon.

Research and Studies: IDeAs is known for monitoring emerging technologies and bringing innovative solutions projects. Our team members have experience collaborating with various organizations to push the design envelope. IDeAs has collaborated on research on key topics including:

electrification of an existing existing multistory, multi-building condominium complex from gas fired heating, gas domestic hot water boilers, gas dryers and gas kitchen burners.

resilient building and campus designs using PV/battery microgrids to provide operational continuity in the event of various scenarios including short term power outages, public safety power shutdowns, earthquakes and climate related natural disasters

hydrogen electrolyzers and hydrogen fuel cells as standby power supply for an off grid PV/wind/energy storage microgrid system

kitchen electrification feasibility studies and recommendations for both Google and Microsoft.

school bus electrification for Twin Rivers Unified School District (which runs the largest electric school bus fleet in the country and is beta testing V2G DC fast chargers the local electric utility).

strategies for minimizing plug loads for the Packard Foundation as well as analysis of actual measured load density several tech companies.

Life Cycle Analysis: As the cost of PV systems and battery energy storage continues to fall, rebates and tax credits evolve and utility rates shift, IDeAs can help clients to understand the economics of energy efficiency, energy generation and energy storage investments and challenges of emerging technologies and trends on our community.
